Headaches, Neck Pain and Chiropractic

The cervical spine (the neck) is one of the most complex and delicate structures in the whole body. Its job is to support the head, allow movement in every direction, and protect the passage of delicate blood vessels and important nerve roots heading to the skull and face.

When the neck muscles are constantly tense or the first cervical vertebrae lose their proper mobility, strong irritation of the surrounding nerves is generated. This mechanical tension radiates upward, turning into that annoying and debilitating head pain that affects your days.

What type of headache do I have?

There are several types of headache, but the most common are:

  • Tension-type headache (myotensive): The most common headache. It feels like a strong band around the head or a "vise" squeezing the forehead, temples or back of the neck, often caused by contracture of the neck and shoulder muscles.

  • Cervicogenic headache: A headache that literally originates from a structural problem of the neck. The pain usually starts at the base of the skull or on one side of the neck and radiates toward the forehead or behind the eye.

  • Migraine: Characterized by throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, which may be accompanied by sensitivity to light and noise. In many cases, neck tension acts as a real trigger for attacks.

What is the real cause of my headache?

Very often a headache is not an isolated problem of the skull, but the result of a complex chain reaction involving nearby structures. The three main mechanical causes we see in the practice are:

  • Poor posture: Spending many hours in front of a computer or smartphone forces the head to tilt forward. This chronic overload causes a loss of the natural cervical curve (straightening), forcing the muscles to contract continuously to support the weight of the head, triggering tension-type headache.

  • Cervical vertebra dysfunction: Loss of mobility of the first three cervical vertebrae (C1, C2 and C3) creates constant irritation of the nerves that travel up toward the skull. This phenomenon gives rise to cervicogenic headache.

  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction: There is a close neurological and muscular link between the jaw and the neck. If you suffer from bruxism (grinding your teeth at night), malocclusion or jaw tension, the chewing muscles become inflamed. This tension is immediately reflected in the neck muscles and temples, causing a painful headache of jaw origin that is often mistaken for an ordinary migraine.

Understanding which of these components (or which combination) is fueling your problem is the key to eliminating it at the root.

What can you do for me?

Our approach begins with a careful assessment of cervical mobility, posture and nervous system function.

Our personalized chiropractic treatment plan works to:

  • Restore proper vertebral mobility of the upper cervical spine through extremely precise, safe and gentle adjustments.

  • Relieve pressure on the cranial nerves, instantly reducing the intensity and frequency of headache attacks.

  • Release chronic muscle contractures in the sub-occipital area, neck and trapezius.

  • Give you personalized ergonomic advice to correct posture at home or in the office, breaking the cycle of pain once and for all.
