SCIATICA & HERNIATED DISCS
What is a herniated disc?
Your spine is made up of bones (the vertebrae) separated by cushions called intervertebral discs. Picture each disc as a small "cushion" with a double function:
-
Absorbing everyday shocks and movements.
-
Ensuring the flexibility and mobility of the spine.
Each disc consists of a tough outer ring (the annulus fibrosus) and a soft, jelly-like center (the nucleus pulposus).
A herniated disc occurs when the annulus fibrosus gives way and the nucleus pulposus bulges out. This gel-like material may still be contained or may be completely expelled from the disc.

Why do I have a herniated disc?
A herniated disc is almost never caused by a single traumatic event, but by an accumulation of mechanical and postural stress over time. The intervertebral disc (our natural shock absorber) gradually wears down and its central nucleus escapes. The balance of the muscles supporting the spine plays a fundamental role, and its disorganization causes strong mechanical and postural stress. Lifting loads incorrectly and sitting for long periods only increase the load on a disc that is already struggling.
What causes my sciatica pain?

A herniated disc can compress nerve structures, causing pain and tingling, up to loss of muscle strength.
In sciatica, what happens is compression of the sciatic nerve, very often caused by a herniation of the lowest intervertebral discs. This causes the classic sensation of lower back pain running down toward the buttock and the back of the leg.
What can you do for me?
At Studio Chiropratico Belig in Florence, the first step is to assess the severity of the herniation.
Small herniations do not require surgery and respond well to conservative treatment. More severe herniations must also be evaluated from a surgical standpoint.
Chiropractic treatment aims to reduce the load on the herniated disc, thereby reducing compression of the nerve.
Prevention of disc herniation is achieved through better care of spinal mechanics, with posture education, harmonious physical activity, weight control and periodic chiropractic treatments.
